This means that the islanders, being an implanted population in a usurped territory, do not have a legitimate right to self-determination, and that any argument based on referendums held on the islands is invalid.

Argentina has singled out the Sea Lion oil project near the Falkland Islands as an urgent threat to its sovereignty claim.

The field, estimated to contain around 1.7 billion barrels of oil, is being developed by Britain’s Rockhopper Exploration and Israel’s Navitas Petroleum.

President Javier Milei warned that Argentina would sanction companies involved in the project, arguing that once production infrastructure is in place, they will be able to extract oil from waters Argentina considers its own.

“If we do not act swiftly, they will have the material capacity to access the oil that lies underneath our sea,” Milei said.
