This military censorship of Hollywood is well documented in Roger Stahl's film "Theaters of War."
 
He went into the archives & found the scripts - marked up with the military's blue pen.
 
He also found the wall of films that never got made - because those directors & producers refused to submit to censorship & couldn't turn a profit without military access.
 
It didn't need to be called censorship. If the studio wouldn't comply, the film simply wasn't made.
 
The most profitable blockbusters were shaped by this process - eventually extending beyond war films to movies where the military battled aliens with ultra-weapons.
 
Some scripts toward the end began to push back slightly. But the censorship process throughout was systematic & well documented.

There was no way to hide that in Gaza with journalists on ground. That is why Israel killed almost 300 journalists in Gaza & Lebanon.
 
US media barely reported their deaths - and never told the American public that they were barred from Gaza unless embedded with the invading army.
 
Reporting those deaths would have undermined the mainstream narrative entirely.
 
There's also simple racism - a racial & class hierarchy in Western newsrooms that did not consider Palestinian journalists their equals.

The US once believed in freedom of press - even exporting it & working to protect journalists globally. Trump's media rhetoric is unprecedented in that context.
 
But the US is now a war-based economy. Forever wars, one after another, driven by a military-industrial complex now unified with media.
 
The US military is effectively an imperial power - the strongest in the world. Denizens of an empire do not have the same rights as citizens of a democracy.

Palestinians were dehumanized by extension. Israeli officials called them animals, subhuman, promised to turn Gaza into a tent city.
 
These statements constitute incitement to genocide but Western media did not push back. Not once.
 
Israeli victims were shown in full humanity - photos, families, jobs. Palestinians were body counts.
 
Even those counts were undermined - "according to the Hamas-directed Gaza Health Ministry" - casting doubt on Palestinian deaths.
 
Palestinians were locked out of the dialogue entirely. That dehumanization continues to this day.

Four decades of corporate monopoly over American media can be traced to a simple shift in regulation.
 
The FCC once required media companies to serve their communities & hold onto outlets for at least 2 years before selling.
 
The 1996 Telecommunications Act opened the floodgates - allowing the first wave of mass consolidation, gobbling up radio stations & local media across the country.
 
The promise at first was lower prices & a more equal playing field.
 
Most Americans weren't paying attention to media regulation bills. And corporations were busy crafting narratives to sell deregulation to the public.
 
The result: increasingly concentrated ownership producing increasingly narrow narratives - presented as the natural status quo.

The New York Times is one of the worst propagators of pro-Israel media framing - yet it maintains credibility through a subtle technique.
 
They use vague language. "Hamas said this, Israel said that" - never framed within international law, never calling Israeli actions war crimes.
 
NYT editors told journalists they couldn't use words like refugee camp, occupation, anything that would expose what Israel is actually doing.

And every now and then, a major exposé breaks through as a "balancing act".
 
That's exactly how the monolithic narrative is protected. One piece of truth, used to hide the overwhelming pattern of propaganda.

Independent journalists are under direct attack. Max Blumenthal of the Gray Zone had all his equipment confiscated upon returning to the US.
 
Ali Abunimah of Electronic Intifada faced the same treatment, while the same is happening in the UK.
 
Some spaces remain - Substack, even LinkedIn still have vestiges of free expression. But it is a battlefield.

Mainstream media included images of Palestinian suffering - but framed within justification for Israel's actions.
 
When Israel destroyed Al-Shifa Hospital, US intelligence & Biden administration confirmed Israel's claim that Hamas had a vast Pentagon-like complex underneath.
 
The Washington Post's own December 2023 report exposed the lie. Doctors Without Borders called for international intervention from inside the hospital. Nobody responded.
 
Meanwhile, mainstream media showed babies dying in the ICU - then repeated Israel's talking point: hospitals aren't protected when the enemy is inside.
 
That is false. Under international law, the attacking party is obliged to protect patients, doctors & medical staff regardless.
 
They lied as usual. They fabricated claims. And the media repeated those claims without challenge.
