Greece released Alexandros Giotopoulos, 82 — convicted leader of the Marxist terrorist group 17 November, which killed 23 people including four American officials between 1975 and 2002 — after 24 years of a 17-life-sentence.

The US State Department called it a "deep disappointment" and urged Greece to return him to prison.

Greece's deputy supreme court prosecutor has filed an appeal to annul the release, arguing the minimum 25-year threshold wasn't met.

The group's victims included four American officials: CIA station chief Richard Welch (1975), Navy Captain George Tsantes (1983), Navy Captain William Nordeen (1988), and Army Sergeant Ronald Stewart (1994).

Two Turkish diplomats were also killed: embassy press attaché Çetin Görgü (1991) and embassy adviser Haluk Sipahioğlu (1994), along with a British military attaché.

The remaining 16 victims were prominent Greeks, including the brother-in-law of current Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
