Germany’s flagship naval modernization project — the construction of six F126 frigates worth ~€10 billion — is facing major delays, and defense giant Rheinmetall is now positioning itself to take over as the main contractor.

The program was originally led by Dutch shipbuilder Damen Naval, working with German shipyards.

However, the project is currently around four years behind schedule.

Rheinmetall has stepped in with a proposal to assume the role of general contractor, aiming to accelerate production and stabilize the program.

The company expects a potential contract decision as early as summer 2026 and says it could deliver the first frigate by the second half of 2031.

A key factor behind Rheinmetall’s push is its recent €1.5 billion acquisition of the naval shipyard division of NVL Group (Lürssen), including the major Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg.

This gives Rheinmetall the industrial base needed to handle large naval construction projects.

The F126 program is the largest shipbuilding effort in the history of the German Navy.

These frigates are primarily designed for anti-submarine warfare, but also support a wide range of missions including escort, surveillance, and international deployments.
