Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan:

We now see that Iran is following a strategy that signals: if it faces a final attack against itself, it will take the region down with it.

In other words, if I go down, I will take the region with me.

This strategy particularly targets other countries in the region, especially their energy infrastructure.

Iran is well aware that the energy infrastructure in key regional states is critical for the stability of the global economy.

BIG: The Trump administration is considering using U.S. military forces to protect oil and gas tankers traveling through the Strait of Hormuz after Iran threatened ships in the area.

Officials are discussing naval escorts for tankers and possibly having the U.S. government back maritime insurance, as insurers are raising rates or canceling coverage.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan:

The idea that Iran, without making any distinction, would bomb mediator Oman, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Jordan— essentially all of them, in my view, is an unbelievably wrong strategy.

It would already significantly increase the very serious risk in the region.

On the other hand, from Iran’s own perspective, it would also be a serious miscalculation.

From our friends’ point of view and in line with our own strategic assessment, this would be a mistake for Iran.

In other words, while Iran is engaged in war and under attack, the countries that have not allowed their bases or airspace to be used by the attacking parties — that have not permitted aircraft to take off from their territory and have not supported the Americans or Israelis, instead maintaining a form of neutrality — should not be targeted.

I believe the Iranians may have misread the situation.

If they had better understood the decision-making pressure Trump was facing and offered him something earlier, Israel’s pressure might not have been as effective.

But that did not happen.

I frankly believe the new leadership could be an opportunity to stop the war.

At the moment, Iran is being governed by a temporary three-member council until a new leader is selected. This could create a window of opportunity.

If handled wisely, a balance must be struck—one in which Iranians do not feel deeply humiliated, while at the same time the concerns of others are addressed.

Otherwise, the war itself could take on a much more dangerous trajectory.
