Contrary to what some may say, “woke decadent” Europe is not facing civilizational erasure. In fact, people still want to join our club—and not just fellow Europeans.

When I was in Canada last year, I was told that over 40% of Canadians have an interest in joining the European Union, so the waiting list is quite long.

I just hope that those who have been waiting for quite some time will not have to wait for longer.

Reporter: The Quad summit did not take place last year, and we have not seen the same strong unity among Quad members in the second Trump administration. Do you believe Quad unity will be sustainable?

I would not say the Quad summit was cancelled, because it was never specifically scheduled. It simply did not take place.

The first meeting Secretary Rubio held on the day he became Secretary of State was a Quad foreign ministers’ meeting.

He then convened another Quad meeting in July in Washington, which we all attended.

I would not overinterpret the absence of a summit meeting.

Last November, when pirates boarded a private tanker off the coast of Somalia, the Japanese Self-Defense Forces rushed to the scene.

Maritime forces from the EU and other partners safely rescued the crew, and the hijacking attempt was thwarted.

More than 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia. Russia is sending North Korean troops to Ukraine.

They are learning new ways of warfare across every domain, using drones, AI, cyberspace, and conventional weapons.

When they return to North Korea, we must consider for what purpose, and against whom, those capabilities will be used.

That is why I say that Ukraine is not a distant problem.

China’s spectacular performance since COVID in particular is creating a shock — a shock to European industry and European jobs.

The right way forward should not be to raise walls or to fall into the trap of generalized protectionism.
