At a NATO meeting in Brussels, senior U.S. official Elbridge Colby told European allies to take the lead in defending themselves, warning the world is more dangerous and conflicts could erupt simultaneously.

“Europe must assume primary responsibility for its own conventional defence.”

“This is not an abandonment of NATO.”

“Power politics has returned, and military force is again being employed at a large scale.”

He said the U.S. will prioritize threats where “only American power can play a decisive role,” but insisted Washington is not turning its back on the alliance.
