The US special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, sharply confronted SDF commander Mazloum Abdi during a closed-door meeting in Erbil just one day before a historic ceasefire was announced between the Syrian government and the SDF.

During the meeting, Barrack accused Abdi of trying to involve Israel in Syria’s internal conflict, warning that such a move would be unacceptable and dangerous.

“You are trying to drag Israel into the conflict, and this will not happen,” Barrack reportedly told Abdi.

Barrack warned that any attempt to draw Israel in would risk “destruction” and could create serious friction between Türkiye and Israel, two of Washington’s key regional allies.

Sources said Barrack was openly frustrated with Abdi for delaying the implementation of a March 2025 agreement that was supposed to integrate the SDF into the Syrian army by the end of 2025.

He accused the SDF leadership of stalling and relying on outside powers rather than adapting to Syria’s new political reality.

Abdi was accused of “stalling, failing to implement the agreement with the Syrian government, and relying on foreign powers.”

Barrack also told Abdi that he was still behaving as if Bashar al-Assad remained in power, despite the collapse of the former regime.

“You still want to deal with the situation as if Bashar al-Assad is ruling Syria,” Barrack said.

“There is a fundamental change; Damascus is our partner today in the fight against terrorism.”
