It has not been easy to stand up to a completely unacceptable pressure from our closest ally through a generation, but at the same time much indicates that the most difficult part now lies ahead of us.

It has become increasingly clear along the way that although it is the Greenlanders who first and foremost feel the insecurity, and although we in the entire Commonwealth have had to listen to many insults, there is something much more fundamental at stake.

This is not just about Greenland or the Kingdom. It is about the principle that borders cannot be changed by force, that a people cannot be bought, and that small countries should not have to fear larger ones.

That is why we speak out—together with allies in the North, in Europe, and around the world—to defend the democratic world order built by generations before us.

We want to strengthen security cooperation in the Arctic—with the United States, NATO, Europe, and our Arctic NATO allies.

Just as the Baltic states do not defend NATO’s eastern flank alone, security in the Arctic is a shared responsibility.

NATO must protect Greenland as it does every part of its territory, and that collective guarantee is the strongest defense against Russian or Chinese threats in the Arctic.

Greenland will not be owned by the United States.

Greenland will not be governed by the United States.

Greenland will not be part of the United States.

Let’s not forget that, at the moment, the Russians are losing massive numbers of soldiers due to the Ukrainian defense—the staunch Ukrainian defense.

In a single month, this amounts to 20,000 to 25,000 Russian soldiers killed. I am not talking about those seriously wounded, but about those killed—dead—20,000 to 25,000 a month.

When you compare that to the Afghan war in the 1980s, where they lost around 20,000 soldiers over ten years, the contrast is stark. Now they are losing that number—and more—in just one month. That is clearly unsustainable on their side as well.
