The Telegraph has uncovered unredacted plans showing China plans to build a concealed underground chamber beneath its proposed London “super-embassy”, positioned directly beside fibre-optic cables carrying highly sensitive financial and internet data for the City of London.

The cables are part of the London Internet Exchange, a core hub handling bank transactions, market data and digital communications for millions of users. Access to them could expose financial systems, government communications and commercial secrets.

The chamber is one of 208 hidden basement rooms beneath the former Royal Mint site. Plans show it would sit just over a metre from the cables, require rebuilding a basement wall next to them, and include hot-air extraction systems—raising concerns it could house advanced computing equipment.

Security experts warn the proximity could allow the cables to be tapped or monitored without detection, a long-established espionage technique.

This is not just about Greenland or the Kingdom. It is about the principle that borders cannot be changed by force, that a people cannot be bought, and that small countries should not have to fear larger ones.

That is why we speak out—together with allies in the North, in Europe, and around the world—to defend the democratic world order built by generations before us.

We want to strengthen security cooperation in the Arctic—with the United States, NATO, Europe, and our Arctic NATO allies.

Just as the Baltic states do not defend NATO’s eastern flank alone, security in the Arctic is a shared responsibility.

NATO must protect Greenland as it does every part of its territory, and that collective guarantee is the strongest defense against Russian or Chinese threats in the Arctic.

Greenland will not be owned by the United States.

Greenland will not be governed by the United States.

Greenland will not be part of the United States.
