The EU and Denmark want to keep Greenland aligned with Europe by dramatically increasing investment—especially infrastructure and mining—making EU support more attractive than U.S. promises tied to independence.

3. Hit back economically

Brussels could threaten U.S. trade using its Anti-Coercion Instrument, targeting American exports if Trump escalates. The challenge: convincing Washington the EU would actually follow through.

4. Deploy troops

If the U.S. moved militarily, Denmark could legally respond and request European forces. Even a small European presence could act as a deterrent—but risks dangerous confrontation.
