The decisive break between President Trump and Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado centers on the Nobel Peace Prize.

According to people close to the White House, Trump’s lack of interest in backing Machado stemmed from her decision to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an award he has openly coveted.

One person familiar with internal discussions called it the “ultimate sin,” saying that had Machado publicly refused the prize in Trump’s name, “she’d be the president of Venezuela today.”
