Saudi Arabia’s futuristic mega-project, The Line — a 500-metre-tall, 170km mirrored city meant to house 9m people — has been dramatically scaled back after colliding with engineering limits and soaring costs.
Conceived by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as the centrepiece of Neom, the project featured fantastical concepts including a giant suspended “chandelier” building, a floating football stadium, and a deep desert cruise-ship marina.
As planning advanced, architects warned that many elements were physically unworkable or unsafe, and required impossible quantities of steel, concrete, and glass.
Foreign investment failed to appear, timelines slipped, and estimated costs ballooned from $1.6tn to around $4.5tn.
Despite $50bn spent, only early groundwork is complete, including massive piles and excavation.
The planned 20 building “modules” have been cut to about three, making the project widely seen as financially unviable.
Neom insists The Line remains a long-term goal, but insiders say the grand vision has effectively collapsed — undone by physics, cost, and politics.

NEW: Trump administration officials told Congress they currently lack legal justification to strike inside Venezuela and have no plans for land attacks.
Existing authority only covers hitting suspected drug-trafficking boats at sea, not targets on land.
The administration is exploring a new legal opinion that could allow land strikes without congressional approval, but no decision has been made.

UAE, together with Israel and other countries, are backing the RSF with clear strategic goals.
In El Fasher, they used weapons that should never be used — civilians were killed, and women were raped as they fled.
