On this day in 1939, Nazi Germany carried out Operation Himmler, a series of staged attacks meant to suggest Polish aggression and provide Hitler with a pretext for war.

Similar actions targeted border posts and infrastructure, using murdered concentration camp prisoners dressed as Polish soldiers to make the deception convincing.

The next day Hitler cited these fabrications as justification for invading Poland, an assault that began the Second World War.
