After a public fallout between Trump and Elon Musk, Trump aides launched a review in June of government contracts with SpaceX, seeking ways to cut ties with Musk’s companies. However, officials quickly found that most of the multibillion-dollar agreements with the Pentagon and NASA were too critical to cancel.

The review, led by the General Services Administration, gathered detailed data from multiple agencies, including the Defense Department and NASA, to assess if alternatives to SpaceX existed. But the analysis revealed the company’s dominant role in space launch services and satellite internet meant few viable replacements.
