U.S. Pressures African Nations to Accept Deported Migrants

As President Trump met with leaders from five West African countries—Liberia, Senegal, Mauritania, Gabon, and Guinea-Bissau—his administration pushed them to accept deported migrants, including third-country nationals.

The U.S. proposal calls for the "safe, dignified, and timely transfer" of these migrants and bars their return to their home countries until U.S. asylum claims are resolved. None of the African leaders publicly acknowledged the proposal during the summit.

This effort is part of a broader push by the Trump administration to secure deportation agreements with countries like Panama, South Sudan, and others, especially when migrants’ home nations refuse to take them back. The administration argues it has the authority to deport serious criminals to third countries.
