Canada’s F-35 fighter jet purchase will cost nearly 50% more than initially disclosed, according to a report by Auditor-General Karen Hogan.
The federal government estimated the 88-jet deal at $19 billion in 2022, but updated figures put the cost at $27.7 billion.
The report comes as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government considers scaling back the order or turning to European alternatives to reduce reliance on U.S. military equipment.

The upcoming GCAP sixth-generation fighter and the newly announced American F-47 should be interoperable allies—not rivals—according to Italian Air Force Gen. Giandomenico Taricco.
“The F-47 will be a U.S. platform, not a competitor,” said Taricco, a top official at the U.K.-based GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO). “Our goal is full interoperability.”
The F-47, announced by President Trump in March and led by Boeing, is slated for deployment by decade’s end—well ahead of GCAP’s 2035 target.
