A shipment of missile fuel chemical from China appears linked to the deadly explosion at Iran’s Shahid Rajaei Port, according to private security firm Ambrey.

The cargo, ammonium perchlorate used for solid rocket fuel, was intended to replenish Iran’s missile stockpiles after its attacks on Israel during the Gaza war.

Ambrey said the fire likely resulted from improper handling of the missile fuel. Ship-tracking data confirmed one vessel carrying the chemical was near the port in March.

Iran has not acknowledged the shipment or commented on the incident.

It remains unclear why the chemicals were not moved sooner, especially after the 2020 Beirut port disaster.
