Europe Eyes Its Own Nuclear Shield
But building a European nuclear force would be technically complex, politically sensitive, and costly, while also requiring compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
• Macron led a secret nuclear drill under Paris in 2022 was France’s bold message to Moscow.
• With Trump cooling on NATO, European leaders are rethinking their reliance on the U.S. nuclear umbrella.
• Calls grow for a European deterrent, possibly led by France & the U.K.—but legal, political & technical hurdles loom.
• Germany, Poland and Denmark show interest, but sharing nukes means sharing sovereignty—a tough sell.
• Meanwhile, Britain’s arsenal stumbles with failed tests and deep U.S. dependence.
• French Senator Cédric Perrin suggests that European allies could co-fund France’s nuclear force, which costs $6.6 billion annually.

Greenland’s hard-line independence party, which came second in this month’s elections, is set to stand outside a new government following disagreements over the territory’s path to break away from Denmark.
Populist Naleraq said it was excluded from coalition talks after almost two weeks of negotiations, according to a statement. The party advocates a fast breakup with Denmark and its leader has previously suggested entering into direct agreements with the US on military and financial support as an alternative to Danish subsidies.

This is the time when stronger states must play the bigger role, those with concrete power, which is France and Great Britain, the European nuclear powers.

Fort Bragg C-130 Crash: 5 Killed During Tank Airdrop Demo
On July 1, 1987, a U.S. Air Force C-130E Hercules aircraft crashed at Fort Bragg during a demonstration of the Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System (LAPES) — a technique designed to extract heavy cargo, such as tanks, from aircraft flying just feet above the ground.
During the second pass, the aircraft descended too steeply and flared too late, hitting the ground and skidding 1,000 yards before bursting into flames.
Four Air Force crew members and one Army soldier on the ground were killed.
The plane narrowly missed spectator stands holding up to 5,200 people.
Investigators found no mechanical failure. Witnesses said extraction parachutes became entangled, and the approach was too steep.
