Israel threatens to permanently annex parts of the Gaza Strip

Israel has threatened to annex parts of the Gaza Strip unless Hamas releases all remaining hostages, escalating the conflict with IDF air strikes.

"I have instructed the IDF to seize additional areas in Gaza, evacuate the population and expand the security zones around Gaza in order to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers," Defence Minister Israel Katz said.

Hamas said ceasefire negotiations were continuing. Hamas official Husam Badran says the group could be more flexible on ceasefire terms, including releasing hostages, to restart talks to end the war.

Israel, however, remains opposed to any deal that allows Hamas to remain in control of Gaza.
