Russia used the Ukraine talks to demand Nato withdrawal from the east. The US delegation rejected the demand.

Cristian Diaconescu, the Romanian president's chief of staff, said the US delegation had rejected Moscow's demand, but there were no guarantees.

"As far as I understand, the situation can change from hour to hour or from day to day," Diaconescu told Antena3 television.

Diaconescu said Russian delegation had "failed to convince the Americans" to withdraw from NATO, and that Britain and France would try to persuade Trump not to give in next week.
