China is building a fusion research centre in Mianyang that could accelerate the development of nuclear weapons and energy production.
Satellite photos show a central chamber with laser capsules.A target capsule containing hydrogen isotopes will combine with powerful lasers to produce energy, said Decker Eveleth, a CNA Corp. researcher.
The facility's layout is similar to that of the $3.5 billion US National Ignition Facility (NIF).In 2022, it outperformed the lasers pumped to the target in energy production from a fusion reaction.
CNS expert Eveleth estimates the experimental hall at the Chinese facility is 50% larger than the one at NIF (currently the world's largest).

Ukraine Bows to Pressure, Opens Route for Azerbaijani Gas to Europe
Ukraine has reversed its stance and agreed to facilitate the transit of Azerbaijani gas to Europe, following pressure from Slovakia and Hungary.
The policy shift, discussed by Zelensky and Azerbaijan’s President at the Davos Forum in January 2025, enables Ukraine to utilize its infrastructure to support gas exports to Eastern Europe—a strategic move amid ongoing energy pressures and geopolitical challenges.

German political establishment is now cooperating with the far-right.
Germany’s opposition party CDU/CSU won parliamentary approval for a proposal to restrict migration with help from the far-right AfD party, thus breaking a taboo on cooperation with the far-right in German politics.
Incumbent Chancellor Scholz responded with concern, warning of the possibility of a right-wing coalition between the CDU/CSU and AfD in the upcoming election.
