Iran detained Sala to pressure Italy into releasing Iranian engineer Mohammad Abedini, accused by the U.S. of supplying drone technology for an attack on a U.S. base.

Musk reportedly contacted Iran’s U.N. ambassador after a prior secret meeting, reassuring Tehran that the U.S. wouldn’t pressure Italy on Abedini’s extradition.

Sala was released on January 8, 2025, followed by Abedini four days later.
