Burkina Faso is shifting its alliance to Moscow, organising events and exchanges. Russian-studying students there aim to promote mutually beneficial partnerships and Russia's role on the continent.

This is based on historical links dating back to the Cold War, when the Soviet Union provided scholarships to thousands of African students. Today, the Kremlin is reviving the Soviet tactic.

Organisations such as La Maison Russe, for example, prepare young Burkinabes to study in Russia and work to perpetuate Russia's influence on the continent through new students.

NEW: NATO to Deploy Two Ships to Guard Baltic Sea Infrastructure

NATO has increased surveillance operations in the Baltic Sea region following suspected sabotage of submarine cables between Finland and Estonia.

Finland's Foreign Minister, Elina Valtonen, announced that two ships have been deployed in the region to monitor submarine activity. Valtonen called for an increase in technical surveillance of the area due to the limitations of ship-based monitoring.

The presence of NATO in the region is seen as calming and stabilizing. The decision to increase surveillance came after Finland retrieved the anchor of a tanker, the Eagle S, from the seabed, revealing criminal damage and communications interference in a cable breach incident.

Greenland is only the tip of the iceberg

A senior Trump aide confirmed that the Greenland gamble is about broader geopolitical dynamics, with the U.S. seeing an increasingly belligerent Russia as a rival for Arctic hegemony.

"This is not just about Greenland. This is about the Arctic. There is a Russia that is trying to be king ... It's about oil and gas. This is about our national security. This is about critical minerals," said Mike Waltz.

Greenland and Svalbard, a Norwegian island, are strategically located. Svalbard is important to Russia because the Northern Fleet must pass through its sea route to reach the Atlantic.

In 2022, when Norway began blocking Russian ships bound for Barentsburg to comply with economic sanctions against Moscow, the Kremlin freaked out and accused Norway of human rights violations.

In 2024, Russia provocatively planted Soviet flags in the Russian-populated towns of Barentsburg and Pyramiden and announced the opening of a new scientific center for polar research.

The biggest danger with Trump’s fixation on taking over Greenland is the potential inspiration it could give to rival powers to start acting in the same imperialist vein, Arctic watchers have warned.
