Barnier, who has deep connections with the Armenian lobby, is known for his anti-Azerbaijani stance.

Barnier was at the center of a diplomatic scandal ahead of the 2022 presidential election.

Alongside Valérie Pécresse, the Republican Party candidate, he visited Yerevan, the Armenian capital, and then entered Karabakh without Azerbaijani authorization.

During the visit, he engaged in illegal talks in Khankendi, and the delegation laid flowers at the graves of Armenian soldiers killed in the Second Karabakh War.
