A new image has emerged showing a Ukrainian MiG-29 fighter jet carrying U.S.-made GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bombs (SDBs) with a mystery weapon pylon.

— The image reveals a special pylon with a white-colored antenna or sensor, possibly related to electronic countermeasures, used to mount the SDB rack under the MiG-29's wing.

— The MiG-29 appears to be one of 13 jets Ukraine received from Slovakia last year, which had previously been upgraded with enhanced avionics and systems.

— The pylon seen in the image is different from standard pylons used on these MiG-29s in Slovak service, making it a mystery.

— Ukraine first disclosed its use of air-launched SDBs in May 2024. Previously, only ground-launched versions (GLSDBs) were known to be in use.

— The SDBs offer Ukraine the ability to strike targets at stand-off ranges up to 46 miles with high accuracy and can penetrate semi-hardened targets.

— Russian electronic warfare has significantly impacted the accuracy of other Western-supplied precision munitions like JDAM-ER missiles, Excalibur artillery shells, and GMLRS rockets.

— Their effectiveness has dropped to below 10% in some cases due to GPS jamming.

— The network has been highly effective in detecting and tracking Russian kamikaze drones like the Shahed-136. It provides early warning to traditional air defenses and helps dispatch drone-hunting teams.

— In one instance, it detected 84 incoming drones, allowing Ukrainian forces to shoot down all but four.

— Lt. Gen. Stephen Gainey, commanding general of U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, advocates integrating a similar low-cost acoustic network into U.S. air defense systems.

— Gen. James Hecker, leader of U.S. Air Forces in Europe and NATO's Allied Air Command, also expressed interest in the technology.
