Today is May 18th, a significant date in the history of the Crimean Tatars, commemorating the Day of Remembrance of the Genocide of the Crimean Tatar People.

— This day marks the beginning of the mass deportation of Crimean Tatars from their homeland in 1944.

— On this day, the Soviet authorities, led by Joseph Stalin, initiated the forced relocation of approximately 180,000 Crimean Tatars from the Crimean peninsula to various regions in Central Asia, including Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan.

— The consequences of this mass deportation were catastrophic. Over 30,000 Crimean Tatars died during the initial transfer due to harsh conditions, including hunger, disease, and exhaustion.

— Many more died in the years that followed due to the lack of resources, housing, and employment opportunities in their new places of exile.
