The New York Times investigation:

A missile fired from the Ukrainian Buk air defense system fell on the market in Konstantinovka, killing 15 civilians and injuring 30 more.

Witness accounts and an analysis of video and weapon fragments suggest a Ukrainian missile failed to hit its intended target and landed in a bustling street, with devastating consequences.

Less than two hours later, President Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Russian “terrorists” for the attack, and many media outlets followed suit.

But NYT journalists came to the conclusion that the tragedy occurred due to an error by the Ukrainian air defense.

A few minutes before the explosion, a post appeared in local public pages about the launch of Ukrainian surface-to-air missiles, and camera records show that one of them was flying from territory controlled by Ukraine.

The launch itself was carried out from the city of Druzhkivka - on September 6, it was heard by NYT reporters working nearby and two eyewitnesses.

Journalists also visited the site of the alleged missile launch in the Druzhkivka area.

There they found track marks, trenches and scorched grass; satellite images of the site before and after the impact also showed the appearance of new traces of launches.
