# INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE

Documents required on the day of interview.
> Esummon (+ID card mentioned in the registration)
> 10th certificate original (+1 photocopy) - used for DOB verification, mark-sheet usually not required
> college degree original (+1 photocopy) - provisional can work, but original need to be submitted after some time
> OBC/EWS original (+1 photocopy) - as per prescribed format
> Two passport size photographs, (don’t worry about latest)

> Don’t worry about self-attesting anything, During document verification they help you with that.

After entry
You are guided to a place where you can place your belongings, also COVID kit is provided. you are asked to wear, the provided gloves and mask, face shield is also given but need not wear during DV. You can only carry one document folder and pen after this point. (put your purse, watch, rings, metro cards, coins etc as they won’t allow you to carry anything inside the interview room)

After that you go to next room where document verification and attendance (photo clicked and signature) will be taken.

During DV, you have to fill few forms and self attest copies, so carry a pen, also Travel allowance form is filled at this point. if there is any problem in document they will write in a form and give you a copy and tell you to send the fresh or rectified original document via Post to UPSC. 15 day time is mentioned, but it is not strictly followed.

The order of Interview is usually according to the roll number split in six and arranged in ascending order.

After DV, they give you back your documents,

One other guy (say X), whose only job is to guide you to the interview room asks you to follow him, place your document folder and pen back at the place where your belongings are placed in 1st step.

After one more security check.

You are asked to sit in a chair just outside the office of the panel member (round corridor, with a view of small garden), a table pedestal fan is there to keep you cool, also water bottle is there.

At the appropriate time, when the members are ready, X will ask you to put the face shield on as you are about to go in. (in other panel, CP asked for no face shield, so they left it outside, but in that case you have to constantly wear the mask, and members were also wearing mask)

X will open the door for you, you ask permission to come in.

You greet members and CP asks you to sit.

Chairman is sitting besides a typical office table. other 3 panel members, are sitting on small chairs 2 on your left side, and one on the right, each having small table.

You sit in a chair, which is well cushioned, with arm rests going all the way round the back to the other side.
CP after reading your DAF, asks you something, and during your answering asks to pull your mask down up-to the chin level. because of the face shield your voice sounds louder to you.

Panel members were not wearing any protective cover in my panel. there were also no glass shield anywhere (may be they got the vaccine 😝)

CP (BB Vyas) mobile rang in between the interview, overall he was cooperative and attentive and eager to listen. He has also a sticky note pad, from where he was asking technical questions.

1. How will you improve the slab of the existing slab in very poor condition?
2. You have two cubes one of 10cm and other of 15cm, which will show higher strength under UTM?
3. Why cylinder test has lesser strength than cube strength?
4. How much is the strength difference?
5. Why is there a strength difference?

M2:
Was mainly asking some trick questions but wasn't grilling me and was smiling most of the time.

Chairman: ok your interview is over good luck.

My feedback: I was comfortable with the chairman questions barring a few which were completely unexpected like the questions on taxes but he was very much cordial. The other member asked a mix of questions which few i answered and few i denied. I avoided bluffing and tried to be honest throughout. Its hard to say whether it was good interview as i didn't know quite a few answers but since this was my second interview in UPSC i would say it was just better than average rest only results will tell.

Good Luck to future aspirants.

Branch : Civil Engineering
Duration : 25 minutes
Board name : TCA Annant
Interview date : 11 March 2021 (Forenoon)

Chairman (TCA Annant) :-
Read DAF and college name, year of passing and place of college (Jalandhar).

Then he asked about my past experience :
Ans : I worked as a Quantity surveyor engineer for 2 years in Tender Dept in Riyadh (Saudi Arab). And as a site Engineer in Gurgaon for 8 months.
So which type of drawings you worked on
Ans : I worked on Structure and Architectural drawings, Although there were other drawings also in tender documents like Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Fighting etc

M1 :-
Have you worked at site.
Ans : Yes sir, I have worked at site in India in Gurgaon Region.
What was the name of your project.
Ans : I Worked at Indira Gandhi Eye Hospital.
Tell me some special features of Hospital.
Ans : We provide specially designed thick walls and slabs for X-ray rooms which are subjected to radiations, In hospital building we take care of all the safety norms, since it is a public building, we provide fire extinguishers, panic bars at all the exit doors to escape corridors.
He asked for some features from civil engineering perspective.
Ans : There was separate STP Tank for Treatment of Sewage. There was basement for Parking, Then he interrupted asking β€œhow many basements were there”….. I Replied β€œThere were two basements”
He asked me to draw Process of Sewage treatment.
Ans : I made the layout of Sewage treatment on paper, then I explained the whole process.
How the waste water is collected in a hospital.
Ans : The Sump pits are provided in basement, from there the water is pumped to STP and treated further.
What is macerator.
Ans : It is a device to grind large waste product into raw sewage.
Where are these used other than sewage.
Ans : Sorry sir, I don’t know.

M2 : -
What is stability of slope and where it is done.
Ans : It is the process of strengthening of soil at slopes, it can be done by soil nailing, Geo-membranes and Geo-textiles as reinforcements, It is done at the slopes of embankments, at sides of excavations etc.
What is angle of internal friction
Ans : It represents the internal friction offered by soil
Is there difference b/w angle of repose and angle of internal friction.
Ans : there is not much difference angle of repose gives an approximate idea of angle of internal friction.
What is negative skin friction.
Ans : it is the downward drag exerted by relative settlement of loose soil deposit surrounding soil on the piles.

M3 :-
As you have done work as quantity surveyor engineer, Suppose you are working on a project which is High income group building and all the foundation works, slab and column has been casted, masonry work has also been done, then what will the next activities that you will perform, what will be the specification of the materials used.
Ans : Sir, I have done structure work only in India, after that I was transferred to overseas location at Riyadh Saudi Arab and there I worked in tender department in office, Also I was not involved in MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) works it was done by separate team. so I am not able to answer this question.

He said you are a civil Engineer, you have done your graduation from NIT Jalandhar, so you should be able to answer this question.

Then I started answering
Sir we will do plastering works, flooring works and all the civil works will be coordinated with MEP works like fire fighting, plumbing, AC ducts, utilities etc. and finally painting works will be done…But he said you are mixing everything and I felt it clearly that he was not satisfied with my answer…

What is full form of EWS, how many income groups are there like high income group
Ans : Economically weaker section. Low income group, Middle income Group, High income group, Ultra high income group.

Then Chairman asked me to Leave saying β€œ Thank you Mohit, Your interview is over”
