Duration: somewhere around 25-30 mins
Afternoon session
I was the first person to be interviewed after lunch. Anant sir's panel was running a bit late. Other panel had already started interviews at 1340 hrs, whereas my turn came at 1410 hrs. I was led to the interview by a friendly person who advised to remove my mask and shield for some time just before the interview as he had seen people fainting due to the heat and anxiety in the pastπ€¦ββοΈ.
Chairman started out by reading my DAF out loud. He read the name of my college, when did I graduate, and read the 3 position of responsibilities that I had mentioned in my extra-curricular.
Chairman:
1. What did you do after your graduation in 2019?
2. So you must have got MTech in the desired college on the basis of your GATE rank?
Clarified that I am undergoing training at IOCL.
3. Where is your training location? Is it Dehradun?
4. When did the training start and when will it end?
Over to member 1:
1. Nowadays, overhead bridges do not have the conventional retaining wall at the ends. They are now using small panels joined together, what is the principle on which this mechanism works?
2. Okay, so you mentioned about roofs... tell me what are the ways to reduce seepage and heat transfer through roofs in residential buildings.
3. Difference between OPC and PPC
4. Why does concrete deteriorate under sea water
5. What kind of cement can you use under sea water
6. What is the %age salt present in sea water
7. Can we use solar panels for heating purposes?
8. What are the different type of solar panels
9. Suppose you are AEE, and are sent to the site for completion of some work, what is the first thing you will do?
I gave some ans, but he kept on insisting on 2 words, 'you' and the 'contractor'.
I again gave some ans.
Again he started explaining me in detail that the design has been done, site had been cleared, contractor is finalised, now what is the first thing you will do.
Now Chairman intervened and said that let me make it simple for you, first of all you have to construct the basement and foundation. But by now I had realised that the M1 was not asking about this. He was looking for something else. So M1 still neglected the chairman and said " Vo sab to theek h, but sabse pehle kya karoge"
After grilling for about 5 mins, he finally gave up. I still don't know what he was trying to get out from me.
Over to Member 2:
You have a good educational background and an excellent GATE rank, I have high expectations from you.
1. Shear centre
2. Specific Energy and Specific Force
3. Basic difference between Rigid and flexible pavements
4. Flexural strength of M20 concrete
5. Tell me about some of the schemes run by the government on Pan-India basis in which there is significant Civil Engineering work involved.
Over to Member 3:
1. History of IIT Roorkee
2. Solani aqueduct, What is Solani
3. Upper ganga Canal system
4. Where is Madhya ganga canal system
5. Why are there so many Cross drainage structures between Haridwar and Roorkee
6. What was the previous name of Water Resource department in your college
7. From which barrage does Upper ganga canal originate
8. What is the apex body for Hydrology in India
9. What is CWPRS and where is it located
10. What is the difference between LSM and WSM
11. Drawings are really important for engineers. Tell me the number of drawings that you have to study at any construction site and their names as well.
12. What are the different type of Cross drainage structures that you know of.
TCA anant sir is pretty cool. He interrupted multiple times in between my answers to ask questions out of curiosity. He was always smiling and kept the environment of the room friendly.
I felt that 2 of the members, specifically member 1 and 3 were senior IES officers themselves, because they asked a lot of practical questions and from multiple disciplines.
While member 2 was more like a senior professor from a reputed college. His personality had some strictness, which reminded me of my college professorsπ

Interview duration: 25 minutes
Panel: T C Anant
Chairman asked about soil characteristics of my hometown and nearby areas and some general questions about my background
Also asked me my favourite subjects
M1: asked basic questions about fluid mechanics
M2: asked practical questions about hydraulic pumps
(He got stuck on one question that I ended up not answering)
M3: asked questions about strength of material, gave me a problem to draw sfd, BMD,
Then asked about gravity dams, asked follow up questions, about embankment etc
Apart from member 2 everyone was cool
My interview started on 2:15 pm
One more thing, if you rely on made easy question answer booklet then you are in for a big surprise.
They asked me a question that was from given in made easy booklet, and I gave as it is answer but they were not impressed, asked more details.
they ask you to speak loudly so they can hear, but won't do the same, I had to ask them to repeat the question and stress on terms they were using.
If you can ask them to speak loudly without being rude or appearing oversmart, then that will really help.

# INTERVIEW EXPERIENCE
Documents required on the day of interview.
> Esummon (+ID card mentioned in the registration)
> 10th certificate original (+1 photocopy) - used for DOB verification, mark-sheet usually not required
> college degree original (+1 photocopy) - provisional can work, but original need to be submitted after some time
> OBC/EWS original (+1 photocopy) - as per prescribed format
> Two passport size photographs, (donβt worry about latest)
> Donβt worry about self-attesting anything, During document verification they help you with that.
After entry
You are guided to a place where you can place your belongings, also COVID kit is provided. you are asked to wear, the provided gloves and mask, face shield is also given but need not wear during DV. You can only carry one document folder and pen after this point. (put your purse, watch, rings, metro cards, coins etc as they wonβt allow you to carry anything inside the interview room)
After that you go to next room where document verification and attendance (photo clicked and signature) will be taken.
During DV, you have to fill few forms and self attest copies, so carry a pen, also Travel allowance form is filled at this point. if there is any problem in document they will write in a form and give you a copy and tell you to send the fresh or rectified original document via Post to UPSC. 15 day time is mentioned, but it is not strictly followed.
The order of Interview is usually according to the roll number split in six and arranged in ascending order.
After DV, they give you back your documents,
One other guy (say X), whose only job is to guide you to the interview room asks you to follow him, place your document folder and pen back at the place where your belongings are placed in 1st step.
After one more security check.
You are asked to sit in a chair just outside the office of the panel member (round corridor, with a view of small garden), a table pedestal fan is there to keep you cool, also water bottle is there.
At the appropriate time, when the members are ready, X will ask you to put the face shield on as you are about to go in. (in other panel, CP asked for no face shield, so they left it outside, but in that case you have to constantly wear the mask, and members were also wearing mask)
X will open the door for you, you ask permission to come in.
You greet members and CP asks you to sit.
Chairman is sitting besides a typical office table. other 3 panel members, are sitting on small chairs 2 on your left side, and one on the right, each having small table.
You sit in a chair, which is well cushioned, with arm rests going all the way round the back to the other side.
CP after reading your DAF, asks you something, and during your answering asks to pull your mask down up-to the chin level. because of the face shield your voice sounds louder to you.
Panel members were not wearing any protective cover in my panel. there were also no glass shield anywhere (may be they got the vaccine π)
CP (BB Vyas) mobile rang in between the interview, overall he was cooperative and attentive and eager to listen. He has also a sticky note pad, from where he was asking technical questions.
