Dangerous vulnerabilities in Microsoft permit malicious code execution
Update your operating system and Office apps to stay safe.
Microsoft has released its June 2023 security updates, addressing 78 vulnerabilities across various products. Among these are 38 remote code execution flaws. Six bugs were classified as critical.
The vulnerabilities impact Windows, Office, and other Microsoft software products. If exploited, the most severe ones could allow attackers to remotely run malicious code on affected systems.
Although the June 2023 Patch Tuesday doesn’t include any zero-day vulnerabilities, several significant flaws were addressed. For example, a set of vulnerabilities – CVE-2023-33133, 33137, 33140, and 33131 – affect Microsoft Office and allow for remote code execution via Excel and OneNote files specially crafted by cybercriminals.
Protect your devices by installing the latest update as soon as possible. For instructions, see the Microsoft Support pages for both Windows and Office.

Cybercriminals faking Google verification to steal user data
Don’t follow any links from unsolicited emails, even if the sender’s name has a blue checkmark next to it.
A new phishing technique has been reported by security architect Chris Plummer. Threat actors have found a way to trick Google’s blue checkmark verification system, which allows users to know if the sender of an email is trustworthy. Cybercriminals are now able to add the blue stamp to their scam and phishing emails. In Plummer’s case, the fake email with the stamp was allegedly sent by the UPS delivery service.
Google is now investigating the flaw, which the company graded P1 (critical priority issue). Until it’s resolved, criminals can exploit it.
If you receive an email with a blue checkmark next to the sender’s name, don’t assume it’s legitimate, and don’t follow any links it urges you to

Cybercriminals stealing Microsoft passwords
Don’t follow any links in emails claiming to be from Microsoft.
A new phishing campaign has been reported by security consultant Troy Hunt. A phishing email pretends to notify the user that their Microsoft Office 365 password will expire soon and gives a link that allegedly allows them to keep the same password. The fake website then asks the user to log into their account.
In this campaign, threat actors use a technique known as “open redirect”, where a malicious URL is integrated within a link to a legitimate website. Once that is clicked, attackers redirect users to a phishing website and attempt to obtain their Microsoft passwords.
If you receive a suspicious e-mail claiming to be from Microsoft, don’t click any links it urges you to. If a password expiration policy is set for your account, you can change your password via https://account.microsoft.com

High-impact vulnerabilities in Firefox can be exploited to run malicious code
Update your browser to keep your data safe.
Mozilla has released Firefox 115, the latest update for the browser. The company states that this is the last Firefox version that users with Windows 7, Windows 8, or macOS older than 10.15 will be able to use.
The update patches 13 issues – four of which are tagged as high-impact vulnerabilities. All of these are security flaws that affect device memory. Exploitation of such vulnerabilities can lead to cybercriminals being able to run malicious code on target devices, corrupt user data, and shut down the target system.
Protect your devices by making sure you’re running the latest version of the Firefox browser. Normally, Firefox installs updates automatically, but you can manually check for them by clicking the triple bar button in the top right corner of the browser, selecting Help, then going to About Firefox. For details, see Mozilla support.
