☠️ Robinhood Chain froze an address via RPC - here's what the case reveals about the network's design
On July 12-13, the CBO of the TokenPocket wallet posted on X: during a livestream, a seed phrase linked to Robinhood co-founder Vlad Tenev was allegedly exposed. Neither Robinhood nor Tenev confirmed it.
The on-chain trail looked familiar. An attacker aggressively accumulated the $1 memecoin, traders piled in - the "Tenev wallet" in on-chain data read as an insider signal. Market cap ran from ~$500k to ~$14M, volume hit ~$22M in under two hours, then the coin crashed ~90%.
1️⃣ Fact check: the RPC freeze
The compromised address was frozen at the level of the official Robinhood Chain RPC. Nodes stopped packaging outgoing transactions from it - transfers and trading became impossible. No on-chain governance. No community vote. One operator decision.
This is the first publicly observed instance of RPC-level censorship on this network.
2️⃣ This is the architecture - not an emergency patch
KYC, address whitelisting, and freeze capability were built into the protocol from launch. Robinhood designed this network for regulated tokenized assets - compliance isn't a workaround, it's the foundation the whole stack is built on.
🟢 TVL crossed $100M in week one of mainnet (launched July 1), top-5 by DEX volume (~$3B over the first two weeks)
🟢 RWA TVL sits at ~$12.8M; the rest is memecoins and stables
🟢 SpaceX and Starlink accounts on X were separately compromised and used to pump another memecoin on the same chain - it hit $2M market cap, then collapsed
For the hack victim, the freeze was the rational response.
For the "on-chain = independence" narrative - it's a structural counterargument: a brokerage chain stays a brokerage chain regardless of which DEX or memecoin market runs on top of it.
✨ Week one, Robinhood Chain was pitched as open blockchain infrastructure. Week two, it demonstrated that the operator can close any address without an on-chain process - instantly, unilaterally, with no governance overhead.
