WEF Investigating Founder Klaus Schwab for Financial, Ethical Misconduct

The World Economic Forum opened an investigation into founder Klaus Schwab after a whistleblower alleged financial and ethical misconduct, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported Tuesday.

The news broke soon after the organization announced that Schwab was stepping down as chairman “with immediate effect” from the organization he founded in 1971 and led for more than half a century.

The WSJ reported that a whistleblower letter sent by current and former staff last week to the WEF board alleged that Schwab and his wife, Hilde Schwab, “mixed their personal affairs with the Forum’s resources.”

The whistleblower also alleged that the Schwabs funded luxury travel and services at the WEF’s expense, misused WEF property, and that Klaus Schwab asked junior employees to withdraw thousands of dollars from ATMs on his behalf.

Schwab denied the allegations and said he would challenge them in a lawsuit, unnamed sources within the WEF told the WSJ. He said through a spokesperson that he will also file lawsuits against “anybody who spreads these mistruths.”

The board opened its investigation during an emergency meeting on Sunday. The 87-year-old Schwab decided to resign immediately rather than stay for an extended transition period as originally planned, the WSJ reported.

Hospitals in Athens, Greece, incorrectly attributed hundreds of deaths to COVID-19, according to a peer-reviewed study published Monday in Scientific Reports.

A team of 19 Greek doctors and researchers studying 530 deaths that occurred in seven Athens hospitals between January and August 2022, found nearly half of the deaths attributed to COVID-19 were unrelated to the virus.

Researchers determined the virus was directly responsible for only a quarter — 133, or 25.1% — of the deaths.

NIH to Use Health Records From Public, Private Databases to Study Autism

During a meeting of NIH advisers, Bhattacharya said the NIH’s autism study will combine records from pharmacy chains, lab testing and genomics data from patients treated by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Indian Health Service, private insurance claims, and fitness tracking apps and smartwatches.

The NIH is also talking with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) about possibly accessing that agency’s patient data.

NIH launched the study — a “massive testing and research effort” to determine what causes autism — earlier this month, days before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that 1 in 31 children had autism in 2022 — up from 1 in 36 children in 2020, and 1 in 1,000 children in the 1990s.

According to CBS News, NIH will also launch a new disease registry to track U.S. citizens with autism. The registry will be integrated into the autism study’s dataset.
