In the Rudolf Steiner Archive I read the following statements from his book Mammoths to Medium - Blood circulation and movement of the heart:

"That's why people today say that the heart works like a pump that pumps blood through the body. As you can see, this is a completely wrong idea.
So we have to say: 'The heart is not a pump, because the heart is moved by our astral body. So we have an astral body, and it moves the heart, or rather, since our ego is also in the astral body, we also move our heart with our ego, and in a very specific way."
