Ulysses S. Grant (born in Point Pleasant, Ohio as Hiram Ulysses Grant; April 27, 1822 β July 23, 1885) was the 18th president of the United States, serving from 1869 to 1877. In 1865, as commanding general, Grant led the Union Army to victory in the American Civil War.
Why the name change? The narrative given for the name change: A simple clerical error listed Grant as βUlysses S. Grant.β Instead of correcting the error, because he was afraid he would be kicked out of the school, Grant changed his name. The βSβ became βSimpson,β his motherβs maiden name.

Etymology of the name Hiram: The name Hiram traces its origins back to the Hebrew language, where it symbolizes the meaning Exalted Brother. This name holds significance in history and has a substantial presence in modern-day usage. In ancient history, Hiram is prominently featured in the Bible as a king of Tyre who maintained a strong alliance with King Solomon of Israel during the 10th century BCE. Their partnership played a crucial role in the construction of Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem, an architectural marvel of that era. The name Hiram conveyed a sense of respect and admiration, reflecting a brotherly bond between the two rulers.

18th US President and famed Union general Ulysses S. Grant belonged to a society known as the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
The fraternal order has its roots in early modern Europe and was an offshoot off of England's Odd Fellows. The American version of the organization was officially founded in 1819 in Baltimore. The order focused on charitable causes and eventually admitted both men and women as members.

1839 Jul 1 At Jesse Grant's (Ulyssesβ father) request, Representative Thomas L. Hamer nominated Ulysses to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, in spring 1839. Grant was accepted on July 1.
Unfamiliar with Grant, Hamer altered his name, so Grant was enlisted under the name "U. S. Grant". Since the initials "U.S." also stood for "Uncle Sam", he became known among army colleagues as "Sam."
