Another thought: Billy Debeck was also the cartoonist for Snuffy Smith. William Hearst sought him out for his newspaper cartoonist. I am wondering if this was a ploy to paint the people of the Appalachian region as a bunch of ignorant hillbillies. The Appalachians are rich in coal, oil and the first gold rush in the US was in the Appalachians. Interesting......
