​​Driven by DeFi, North America’s crypto volume increased 1,000% year-over-year.

Chainalysis said North America’s DeFi transactions were led by retail investors in the last year, with many transactions under $10,000.

Digital analytics firm Chainalysis reported that the growth in North America’s crypto market has been driven by the rise in popularity of decentralized finance.

In its 2021 Geography of Cryptocurrency Report, Chainalysis said the monthly crypto transaction volume across North America grew by more than 1,000% from July 2020 to June 2021. The monthly volume reached a peak of $164 billion in May 2021 before dipping to just over $100 billion in June.

According to Chainalysis’ report, decentralized finance, or DeFi, was largely responsible for North America continuing to maintain its position as one of the largest crypto markets worldwide. DeFi transactions represented 37% of North America’s overall transaction volume from July 2020 to June 2021, with residents sending roughly $276 billion in crypto to platforms in the DeFi space.

The Central, Northern and Western Europe region sent the most in crypto overall — $389 billion, roughly 40% of its overall transaction volume during the same time period. Chainalysis said “DeFi whales” were responsible for turning the region into the world’s biggest cryptocurrency economy, with the majority of institutional-sized transfers going towards platforms in decentralized finance.

However, the report said North America’s DeFi transactions were led by retail investors in the last year, with many transactions under $10,000. Uniswap was the most popular DeFi platform in North America, with users having sent more than $100 billion in transaction volume between July 2020 and June 2021.

“Right now, DeFi is targeted towards crypto insiders,” said dYdX growth lead David Gogel. “It’s people who have been in the industry for a while and have enough funds to experiment with new assets.”

​South Korean pension fund to invest in Bitcoin ETF: Report.

KTCU plans to invest in Bitcoin ETF products after consultation with domestic asset managers,” an executive reportedly said.

South Korea’s public pension fund, the Korean Teachers’ Credit Union (KTCU), is reportedly looking to gain exposure to Bitcoin (BTC) via a crypto exchange-traded fund (ETF).

KTCU, one of the largest institutional investors in South Korea, is considering investing in a pure Bitcoin ETF or Bitcoin-linked ETFs in the first half of 2022, local news agency The Korea Economic Daily reported Monday.

According to the report, KTCU is considering investing in several Bitcoin ETF products, including those by South Korean asset management firm Mirae Asset Global Investments. The company launched two ETFs tracking the value of Bitcoin futures via its Canadian subsidiary, Horizons ETFs, in April 2021.

“As there are some well-made cryptocurrency-linked ETF products by asset managers such as Korea’s Mirae Asset Global Investments, we plan to invest in the ETF products after consultation with domestic asset managers,” an executive at KTCU reportedly said.

The official also mentioned potential investment in a Bitcoin ETF by Mirae Asset’s subsidiary, Global X ETFs, which filed for a Bitcoin ETF with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in July.

According to the report, KTCU is the second-largest institutional investor in South Korea, with $40.2 billion in assets under management. The pension fund has allocated 40% of its investments in alternative assets, 10% domestic and 9% international stocks. KTCU has yet to determine the size and other details of its potential Bitcoin ETF investment.

The news comes amid global pension funds getting increasingly interested in gaining exposure to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and major companies in the industry. Last week, the Houston Firefighters’ Relief and Retirement Fund reportedly purchased $25 million in Bitcoin and Ether (ETH). Canada’s Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board participated in a $420-million funding round for major crypto exchange FTX, the firm announced on Thursday.

​Bitcoin Regains Strength, Ethereum Hits New ATH, SHIB Slides.

Bitcoin price was able to start a fresh increase above the USD 60,000 and USD 60,500 resistance levels. BTC climbed above USD 61,200. It is currently (04:18 UTC) facing resistance near USD 62,000, above which there could be a steady increase.

Besides, most major altcoins are gaining bullish momentum. ETH rallied 9% and it even spiked above USD 4,400. XRP could test the USD 1.12 resistance zone. ADA is now consolidating above the USD 2.00 level.

After a close above USD 60,000, bitcoin price was able to recover further. BTC was able to climb above the USD 60,500 and USD 61,200 resistance levels. An immediate resistance is near the USD 61,800 level. The next major resistance is near USD 62,000, above which the price may perhaps gain bullish momentum.

On the downside, an initial support is near the USD 61,200 level. The main support is now forming near the USD 60,000 level, below which the price might gain bearish momentum.

Ethereum price started a major increase above the USD 4,200 resistance. ETH rallied 9% and it even spiked above USD 4,400, reaching its new all-time high of USD 4,416 (per Coingecko) and correcting lower soon after. On the upside, an initial resistance is near the USD 4,400 level. The next major resistance is near USD 4,440, above which the price could accelerate higher towards the USD 4,550 level.

Another US politician deciding to accept some of their salary in crypto shows how bitcoin (BTC) is increasingly becoming a political instrument for decision-makers who wish to appeal to more tech-savvy and crypto-friendly voters.

The election of Eric Adams as the new mayor of New York City has added another crypto-enthusiast to the growing club of crypto-friendly US mayors who declared readiness to accept their next paycheck in BTC, alongside the mayors of Miami and Jackson, Tennessee.

Miami’s notoriously pro-crypto Mayor Francis Suarez, who was reelected earlier this week as the Republican Party’s candidate, announced shortly after his win he would take his next paycheck “100% in bitcoin”.

This has triggered a response by Adams, a Democrat, who vowed during the campaign to transform the Big Apple into “the center of bitcoins.”

“In New York we always go big, so I’m going to take my first THREE paychecks in Bitcoin when I become mayor. NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!” Adams tweeted.

Taking into account his predecessor’s reported base annual salary of USD 258,541, this would leave Adams with about USD 64,635 worth of cryptocurrency, or slightly more than BTC 1 as of pixel time (UTC 09:00).

The mayor-elect’s declaration was welcomed by Suarez who congratulated Adams on his election and said he was looking “forward to the friendly competition in making our respective cities a crypto capital!”

As the stakes went higher, the competition for America’s most crypto-friendly mayor was joined by Scott Conger of Jackson, Tennessee, who has served as the city’s mayor since 2019. The politician announced that, while he could not legally be paid in bitcoin by the city under the state law, he would make sure to buy some crypto with his next salary “and instantly convert my next paycheck to Bitcoin”.

​Major Swedish Power Company Defends Bitcoin Mining as Regulators Propose Ban.

A joint statement from the directors-general of the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency has called for a total ban on proof-of-work mining of cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin (BTC), within the EU. Meanwhile, Sweden’s state-owned power company is publicly defending crypto mining, saying it has the potential to balance the load on power grids.

According to the joint statement, crypto miners have taken a keen interest in the Nordic region because of the access to renewable energy in the region. It added that this is not in Sweden’s interest, because the country “needs the renewable energy targeted by crypto-asset producers for the climate transition,” as well as for its ability to meet the Paris Climate Accords goals.

“Energy-intensive mining of crypto-assets should therefore be prohibited,” the statement went on to say, while also describing the “social benefit” of digital assets as “questionable.”

In conclusion, the statement called on the EU to ban proof-of-work mining throughout the region as a “first step,” saying:

“A ban on the proof-of-work mining method within the EU could be an important first step in a global move towards a greater use of more energy-efficient crypto mining methods. It would also mean that our renewable energy is used as efficiently as possible in order to support the transition towards climate neutrality.”

The joint statement from the two government bodies has also received widespread attention in the Swedish media, with Swedish broadcaster SVT hosting a discussion on the topic, and op-eds taking a stand for and against the proposal being published in several local newspapers.

​Argentina U-Turns On Crypto Tax With New Regulation.

In an abrupt U-turn on an earlier stance adopted by the country’s authorities, the Argentinian government has released a decree that imposes a tax on credits and debts on transactions involving cryptoassets. The regulation was published on November 17, and the measures entered into force on the same day.

“The exemptions provided for in this decree and in other regulations of a similar nature will not be applicable in those cases in which the movements of funds are linked to the purchase, sale, exchange, intermediation and/or any other operation on cryptoassets, cryptocurrencies, digital coins, or similar instruments, in the terms defined by the applicable regulations," the Argentinian cabinet said in the decree, as reported by local paper Buenos Aires Times.

Crypto transactions were previously exempt from the levy which, under Argentinian law, is called the tax on credits and debits in bank accounts and other transactions. Such transactions were treated as if they were cash transfers, according to Sebastián Domínguez from local tax consultancy SDC Asesores Tributarios.

The tax is levied at rates of up to 0.6%.

The latest development imposes yet another levy on Argentinian crypto users. In 2017, a reform of the country’s tax code extended the income tax to capital gains earned from transactions that involve cryptoassets.

Earlier this month, it was reported that a number of companies were eyeing Latin America – and countries like Argentina and Paraguay in particular – amid their search to create new bases for bitcoin (BTC) and altcoin mining operations.

Data released by the University of Cambridge indicates that Argentina accounted for just 0.05% of the global bitcoin hashrate last August. It is yet to be seen whether the government’s revised tax policy will have a negative impact on the country’s appeal to crypto industry players.
