China secretly buys Italian drone company without authorities realising

An investigation into a suspicious Hong Kong-based takeover of Italian drone-makers Alpi has revealed the deal was a shell cover for Beijing to acquire military tech secretly.

In 2018 a HK-registered entity that had been created two months earlier bought a 75% stake in Alpi before ploughing a further $1.5mn into the company, but the overpriced purchase left traces through a web of state-run companies.

Soon after the tech and intellectual property were transferred to China, skirting investment screening designed to protect against the sale of military tech and production which requires Italian govt permission by law.

I was a payload operator for a .mil contracted UAV team. Here are some tips.

- use a thermal blanket when moving.
- use canopy for concealment.
- use crowds for blending in.
- keep your feet off the ground if possible. Use fences or close to the wall for transit.
- time your movements with fog or rain. Moisture is the enemy of UAV camera optics.
- all UAV’s use Near IR. Infrared. Blend in with heat sources. Car engines or truck engines or exhaust.
- don’t be the only fucker standing in a field.
- if the weather is good, they can and will find you.
- move through buildings if possible. Use entry and exits and delay time between movement. It fucks the operator up.
- use barriers and obstacles to hide under.
- use tall obstacles to reduce your signature. The more heat in an obstacle the better. Think reflecting surfaces.
- dark clothing is actually worse.
- try to reduce your thermal image anyway possible. Water travel on the edge of a stream or River.
- check the weather and know what the humidity and cloud layer is. The lower the cloud layer the harder it is for the UAV team to maintain link because they have to drop lower.
