For those who don't know, CERN is the "European Organization for Nuclear Research". CERN is the abbreviation for its French name:
Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire
It was established as a provisional body founded in 1952 with the mandate of establishing a world-class fundamental physics research organization in Europe
CERN has 23 Member States:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United Kingdom
I list all of them for a reason

It was one of 114 logos submitted by Marcel Bron from the ISR Division.
Bron also jumped to design the first stamp that was issued to commemorate CERN in 1964, but the design that included the , at the time, 13 Member States' Flags
