General Stanley McChrystal's Career and Departure

2003-2008: McChrystal serves as the commander of Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC), overseeing many counterterrorism operations.

June 2009: McChrystal is appointed commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan.

April 2010: Rolling Stone journalist Michael Hastings begins to shadow McChrystal and his staff for the article.

June 22, 2010: Rolling Stone publishes "The Runaway General," which includes disparaging remarks about senior Obama administration officials made by McChrystal and his aides.

June 23, 2010: President Obama summons McChrystal to Washington, D.C., and accepts his resignation. General David Petraeus is named as his replacement.

May 2, 2011: Operation Neptune Spear is carried out by U.S. Navy SEALs, resulting in the death of Osama bin Laden. Admiral William H. McRaven, head of JSOC at the time, is credited with planning and overseeing the mission.
