Not being able to sleep is the fcking worst πππ’π

Because someone else recently was asking some start-up/business tips around 'furry artist-ing' .. thought I might copy-paste-share here too!
ββββββ
πΉ First step (and probably the most helpful*) can highly reccomend reading this book: Business Tips for the Right-Brained - M.C.A Hogarth
https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/38204964-business-for-the-right-brained
This is just cover to cover GREAT advice for any & every artist/creative type looking to monetise thier creative works! <3
πΉ Second / quick tips;
β’ Consistency
Posting often (even small inconsequential WiPs/scribbles/etc) the more often you have things to look at, are surfacing on feeds or the more consistent your posting is, the better and more visible you will be more often
<This can be hard to move into, but it will help a great deal>
β’ Do/Draw/Create a something specific
(like a short run of art pieces to a theme you might like) or fan-derived piece from something you like/is popular or trending atm (things like the 'Draw X in your style' or 'Y character of yours in this article of unique clothing's etc)
Any momentum you might be able to get from those waves can be good! (.. Though, and ofc, be having fun with that too/do stuff you still find interesting & fun)
It's not going to work out well if your forcing Yourself to draw & craft things that aren't interesting to you (or worse, you dislike)
β’ Be prompt and professional in business dealings with others
This may go without saying; but honestly, a good transaction experience all the way through is what is going to leave clients with the best taste in thier mouth, going to inspire repeat clients & those to also reccomend you to others too :)
This means things like;
- Having clear pricing & ordering information
- getting back to folks in a timely manner
- Being polite always (even/especially through customer complaints or harder negotiations) hear them out, treat issues fairly/as you might like to have things resolved being on the other end/etc
[This doesn't even mean suffer abuse from anyone, client or otherwise!]
But settling all the terms & agreements ahead of money changing hands, and/or any work starting is the best way to tackle this π
β’ CHARGE APPROPRIATELY! (and time <literally everything you do> involved with taking, working on & completing an order)
I use this web app myself;
https://www.online-stopwatch.com/cash-clock/
(You can change the '$ per hour' rate by clicking the blue bar directly underneathe the green & red buttons)
This part is actually crucial (and I know waaaay to many artists whom -simply do not, shy away from, or refuse to doso)
.. .. .. I used to be one of them
By not doing this all you are simply left in the dark as to how long things are -actually- taking you to do
And 'how long it is' vs 'how long it felt like' will very often surprise everyone.
It can be a little daunting to feel pressured by a clock ticking up; but if that's the case, set the timer, ignore it & go about the task as normal, then simply see/record what that is at the end.
That time taken, weather longer (or shorter) than anticipated, is how long it -actually- takes to do the work required.
If one is charging less than what that seems necessary to cover for the work involved: then one is simply overworking
Which isn't sustainable over time
(It's quite literally 'paying someone else to work for them') can't reccomend it
A day job on the side working minimum wage is more worth ones time in that case
Time and time again, too many creative folks I know get quickly burn out, or hardly get started at all, because they are not charging properly per their working hour (which can be a bummer on the money-earning side of art-working, but also sour ones joy in simply making & creating art also)
Like any job: it -must- be sustainable
(..& ideally, profitable beyond!)
= I'll leave off with another resource that is super handy!
