When we ask people directly for something they definitely can do they receive from us the privilege of continuing to keep their distance in certain ways while they learn more how it is safe to engage with us. This is not necessarily a conscious process at all. It is a tremendous gift to use our media privilege in this way because although it can be painful seeing how people don't understand something yet still at the same time they are being given an opportunity to understand more in a way that is more graceful than being pressed into immediate accountability, there can be an opportunity to watch the unfolding of how someone discovers this their own selves instead of being pushed to it unwillingly as so many of us have been.
