Public enterprises evaluated for privatization

Valuations and other preparations for the privatization process of major public enterprises is ongoing, Capital learned.
Brook Taye, an adviser at Ministry of Fianace, said that the relevant bodies in specific areas are working on the process of privatizing local enterprises.
He said that placing a value on sugar factories is expected to be finished in the near future. Ethiopia says hello to two telecoms

As a result of the economic reform process two more telecoms are expected to join the market next April.
The Ethiopian Communications Authority (ECA) announced that it has officially kicked off the public consultation process prior to issuing new telecommunications licenses. Economic growth modest throughout Africa: IMF

The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) regional economic outlooks predicts modest economic growth of around 3.2 percent, in most sub-Sahara African countries during 2019.
The IMF writes that growth remains too low to meet the needs of growing populations.

Alliance formed to address clean cooking

The Netherland development organization (SNV), more than 15 NGO’s, and over 600 private enterprises along with government agencies overseeing health, women and children joined hands to get more people to use clean stoves. African Development Bank shareholders approve $115 billion capital increase

At an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting on Friday November 1, in Abidjan, Governors of the African Development Bank (AfDB), representing shareholders from 80 countries, approved a landmark USD 115 billion increase in capital for the continent’s foremost financial institution.

Railway waits on Djibouti’s payment
The Ethio Djibouti Railway SC (EDR) says it is low on working capital because one of its two shareholders, Djibouti, did not settle its portion when they formed the company.

Job program looks to improve startup environment

Ethiopia’s Job Creation Commission (JCC) is trying to use examples from Silicon Valley, particularly regulatory sandboxes to speed up innovation. Hopes are that this will encourage creative businesses and develop more jobs.
A regulatory sandbox (RS) usually refers to live testing of new products or services in a controlled/test regulatory environment for which regulators may (or may not) permit certain regulatory relaxations for the limited purpose of the testing. Arrests take place after recent unrest

Four hundred and nine people have been arrested in connection with violence which took the lives of 78 people last week largely in the Oromia region. Although not limited to these cities, places like Dire Dawa and Harrar saw massive property damage and civilian casualties after a Facebook post by Jawar Mohammed concerning removal of his security team.
The Prime Minister’s Press Secretary, Nigussu Tilahun, said there would have been more fatalities if some social groups hand not worked to calm the situation down.

Fertilizer to be transported by train

A logistics delegation is looking at potentially transporting fertilizer via the electric Ethio-Djibouti railway line.

Bogalech Gebre 1960-2019 a woman of action

Ethiopian scientist and activist Dr Bogalech Gebre, most commonly known as Boge was born at Kembata Tembaro southern Ethiopia in 1960 to a family of 14. Like the other girls found in Africa, Boge suffered from female genital mutilation when she was about twelve. She lost one of her elder sisters when giving birth.
