Asian share indices fell today as concerns over the latest outbreak of COVID-19 cases in China weighed on investor sentiment ahead of key corporate earnings. Authorities in China have ramped up screening and testing, and several regions have imposed restrictions on cross provincial travel. On Sunday, the authorities said there were increasing chances of the latest outbreak spreading further. Meanwhile, investors were also concerned over the pace of policy normalisation that major central banks including the US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank may adopt due to the impact of inflation. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in a virtual appearance on Friday that elevated US inflation readings are likely to last into next year and the central bank is alert to the risk that consumers will start expecting higher prices, which could prompt them to demand higher wages and lock in longer-lasting inflation. He also said it was “time to taper” the Fed’s $120 bln in monthly asset purchases. The Federal Open Market Committee will hold its next meeting on Nov 2-3.
