Alberta premier agrees with Doug Ford's pitch to explore kicking Mexico out of trade agreement

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has expressed support for Ontario Premier Doug Ford's suggestion to consider a bilateral trade agreement between Canada and the U.S., excluding Mexico, if Mexico doesn't tighten restrictions on Chinese products. Smith agrees with Ford's concerns that Mexico is not an equal partner in the North American trade agreement and has been allowing Chinese investment, particularly in the auto sector, which could harm Canadian and American industries. Ford also raised the idea of returning to a pre-NAFTA trade agreement between Canada and the U.S. to address concerns over Mexico being a "backdoor" for Chinese goods.

Smith believes a bilateral agreement could help avoid tariffs and strengthen trade relations between Canada and the U.S. This comes as U.S. officials, including President-elect Donald Trump, have voiced concerns about Chinese-owned car plants in Mexico, with Chinese EV maker BYD scouting locations there. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland acknowledged U.S. concerns over Mexico's alignment on China but did not directly endorse the idea of a bilateral deal. Meanwhile, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed Ford's proposal, asserting that it has "no future" and emphasizing Mexico's past support for Canada in NAFTA negotiations.

Tests show high level of 'forever chemicals' in Montreal firefighter bunker gear

Safety equipment meant to shield firefighters from danger may be increasing their risk of cancer and premature death. Tests conducted at Université de Montréal's environmental chemistry laboratory for Radio-Canada's Enquête revealed high levels of PFAS in the textiles that make up a firefighter's bunker gear, the clothing they wear when they respond to calls.

The bunker gear protects firefighters from flames, heat and chemical spills. It is made up of three different layers. All three, including the one in direct contact with firefighters' skin, were found to be imbued with PFAS.

Ottawa appoints special mediator on Day 2 of Canada Post strike

A special mediator has been appointed to help resolve the strike by 55,000 Canada Post workers, who walked off the job over stalled contract talks. The union argues Canada Post's offer doesn't address key issues like job security and working conditions. While the federal government is not intervening, Labour Minister Steven MacKinnon stressed the importance of negotiations. Canada Post, already facing significant financial losses, warned the strike could worsen its financial challenges. Talks are ongoing.

NCC removes buckthorn in Atlantis Woods after community pressure

The National Capital Commission (NCC) has decided to remove  widespread buckthorn from Atlantis Woods in Ottawa's Westboro Beach neighbourhood after the community pressured them to improve the forest's health.

Removing the invasive shrub was part of the NCC's original plan to redevelop Westboro Beach, according to Westboro resident Kristen Hayes. Hayes said she and other locals were consulted over how to remove the buckthorn, but the NCC initially chose not to go ahead with the removal efforts.

First came the apartment. Then he got clean. Now he's giving back

The first time Colin Beaudry was arrested, he was just 13 years old. Now, at 47, Beaudry is finally breaking a cycle of addiction, incarceration and homelessness — a change he hopes will inspire others.

Beaudry now lives alone in an apartment he finally secured in April after a year of living on the street. He even has a cat named Kit Kat.

"Maybe I'll give someone else hope, too," said Beaudry as he sat at a picnic table in Dundonald Park in Ottawa's Centretown neighbourhood.

Quebec launches action plan to improve access to abortion, protect women's right to choose

Quebec has introduced its first-ever action plan aimed at improving access to abortion in the province and reaffirming women's right to choose, particularly in light of the setbacks to reproductive rights unfolding in the United States.

Martine Biron, minister responsible for the status of women, announced the Plan d'action gouvernemental sur l'accès à l'avortement 2024-2027 on Monday, saying this plan responds to women's concerns about the protection of their rights.

"Everywhere in the world, we're seeing a decline in women's rights," Biron said, noting the overturning of Roe v. Wade in the United States in 2022, ending 50 years of federal abortion rights.

'Bomb cyclone' set to bring strong winds to B.C.'s coast, forecasters say

A powerful "bomb cyclone" is expected to hit B.C.'s coast Tuesday evening, bringing hurricane-force winds up to 100 km/h on Vancouver Island and 90 km/h in Victoria. The storm, caused by a rapid pressure drop, may down trees, cause power outages, and disrupt travel. Areas near water and inlets will face the strongest winds. This follows a series of extreme weather events in B.C. this fall, including deadly floods, windstorms, and hail. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items as the storm approaches.

Former captain with Air Cadets found guilty of sexual offences involving children

A former captain working with Air Cadets has been found guilty of all eight charges brought against him, including five involving sexual abuse against children and another three involving child pornography. During his weeks-long trial earlier this year, Adrian Schmid pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Superior Court of Justice also heard from one police officer who testified that more than 11,000 images and 140 videos of child pornography were recovered from a USB drive taken from Schmid's house. The files — which showed youths engaging in a wide range of graphic sexual acts — had been deleted, but police were able to recover them after their seizure.
