Review into amputation underway after patient says wrong leg removed at Grace Hospital

A patient safety review is underway after a 48-year-old man went in for an amputation of his right leg at Grace Hospital, but came out of the procedure to find out his left leg below his knee had been removed.

Jason Kennedy, a former commercial fisher, knows he may eventually lose both legs but he said his right foot was in worse condition due to a bone infection he lives with and that's the one his doctor at a different hospital told him would have to be amputated.

Hamilton building collapse at downtown park could've had 'terrifying' consequences, mayor says

Two buildings that collapsed by Hamilton's Gore Park early Monday morning were slated for demolition in 2013, only to be saved after heritage advocates pushed for a different development plan to restore their facades. But the buildings have sat boarded up and fenced off since then. On Monday morning, facades collapsed into a pile of rubble on the sidewalk.

The collapse exposed the interior rooms to passersby, who gaped at the massive hole. A Hamilton police officer on the scene told CBC Hamilton that calls came in around 6 a.m. reporting the collapse.

City budget comes with 3.9% tax increase for most homes

Ottawa city staff have drawn up a budget that would hike taxes and transit fares to patch over a gaping transit deficit. Even then, it only balances by assuming the federal or provincial governments will come to the rescue with millions more.

If council passes the draft budget, property taxes would go up by 2.9 per cent to fund most city services, though an eight per cent hike to the transit levy means most taxpayers will effectively pay 3.9 per cent.

Northern Ontario man and woman arrested following a 3-month-old baby's death

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have charged two people from the northern Ontario community of King Kirkland in the death of a three-month-old infant in September 2022.

Police say they responded to a call from emergency services in Chamberlain Township, near Englehart, on Sept. 3, 2022, regarding a three-month-old infant with no vital signs. Paramedics brought the baby to a local hospital where the infant was pronounced dead. Police say they conducted a thorough investigation following the baby's death, leading to arrests this week in King Kirkland— a small village just east of Kirkland Lake.

Canada's top court has declined to hear the appeal of one of two men found guilty in the deaths of two Métis hunters who were shot and killed in northeastern Alberta.

As is customary, the Supreme Court did not give reasons for its dismissal of Anthony Bilodeau's leave to appeal. The decision to dismiss was issued Thursday.

Bilodeau was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Maurice Cardinal, and of manslaughter in the death of Cardinal's nephew, Jacob Sansom.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says approximately 55,000 are striking, claiming little progress has been made in the bargaining process. RCMP prepares to deploy body cameras to thousands of officers nationwide

Thousands of RCMP officers will start wearing body cameras over the coming months, marking a pivotal shift in how Mounties and Canadians interact.

The long-anticipated national rollout of body cameras is happening in stages, the RCMP said Thursday. Starting next week, Mounties at select detachments will start carrying body-worn cameras on their chests. The audio and video will be uploaded and maintained on a digital evidence management system.

Over the next nine months, roughly 1,000 frontline RCMP officers per month will deploy with Axon Public Safety Canada Inc.'s cameras. The force estimates that 90 per cent of frontline members will be using body-worn cameras by this time next year.

Alberta premier agrees with Doug Ford's pitch to explore kicking Mexico out of trade agreement

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has expressed support for Ontario Premier Doug Ford's suggestion to consider a bilateral trade agreement between Canada and the U.S., excluding Mexico, if Mexico doesn't tighten restrictions on Chinese products. Smith agrees with Ford's concerns that Mexico is not an equal partner in the North American trade agreement and has been allowing Chinese investment, particularly in the auto sector, which could harm Canadian and American industries. Ford also raised the idea of returning to a pre-NAFTA trade agreement between Canada and the U.S. to address concerns over Mexico being a "backdoor" for Chinese goods.

Smith believes a bilateral agreement could help avoid tariffs and strengthen trade relations between Canada and the U.S. This comes as U.S. officials, including President-elect Donald Trump, have voiced concerns about Chinese-owned car plants in Mexico, with Chinese EV maker BYD scouting locations there. Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland acknowledged U.S. concerns over Mexico's alignment on China but did not directly endorse the idea of a bilateral deal. Meanwhile, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum dismissed Ford's proposal, asserting that it has "no future" and emphasizing Mexico's past support for Canada in NAFTA negotiations.

Tests show high level of 'forever chemicals' in Montreal firefighter bunker gear

Safety equipment meant to shield firefighters from danger may be increasing their risk of cancer and premature death. Tests conducted at Université de Montréal's environmental chemistry laboratory for Radio-Canada's Enquête revealed high levels of PFAS in the textiles that make up a firefighter's bunker gear, the clothing they wear when they respond to calls.

The bunker gear protects firefighters from flames, heat and chemical spills. It is made up of three different layers. All three, including the one in direct contact with firefighters' skin, were found to be imbued with PFAS.
