Thousands without power after strong winds batter B.C. Outages may continue overnight

Strong winds, with gusts reaching up to 108 km/h, battered coastal areas and the Central Interior of British Columbia on Monday, causing widespread power outages. As of 4:30 p.m. PT, around 100,000 customers were still without power, mainly in the Lower Mainland, though Vancouver Island, Okanagan, and Kootenay regions also experienced outages. B.C. Hydro warned that outages could last overnight, with crews focusing first on safety hazards, followed by restoring power to critical services and large outages.

The storms, accompanied by heavy rain, brought down trees and branches weakened by years of drought, damaging B.C. Hydro equipment. Wind warnings were issued across much of the province, with risks of flying debris and additional power disruptions. Meteorologists reported that the storm was affecting all of B.C., not just localized areas.

B.C. port employers launch lockout at terminals over contract dispute with foremen

A lockout of over 700 unionized workers in British Columbia began at 4:30 p.m. PT on Monday, following strike actions by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 514 (ILWU). The BC Maritime Employers Association (BCMEA) implemented the lockout after the union engaged in job actions, including an overtime ban. The lockout will last indefinitely but will not affect grain or cruise operations.

The union is demanding job protections against automation, while the BCMEA insists its final offer remains open and would avoid further disruptions. The union has criticized the BCMEA for making concessions that would remove parts of their collective agreement, and negotiations have stalled.

B.C.'s chief electoral officer defends election integrity as premier proposes all-party review into counting

Elections B.C. is investigating errors in the recent provincial election, including an uncounted ballot box with 861 votes and other discrepancies. These mistakes were attributed to challenging weather and the use of a new electronic voting system, though they did not affect the election results. B.C. Conservative Leader John Rustad called for an independent review to ensure public confidence in the electoral process. Premier David Eby supported forming an all-party committee to assess and improve the systems used by Elections B.C.

Atlantic Indigenous health research network receives $4M from Ottawa

The lead of an organization that works with Indigenous people in Atlantic Canada says renewed federal funding will help give communities more agency over health research.

The Wabanaki-Labrador Indigenous Health Research Network is receiving $4 million from the federal government over five years, said Debbie Martin.

"As we move forward, we're going to start to dive into more of what we're hearing from communities about what their needs are," said Martin, who is also the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Peoples Health and Well-Being at Dalhousie University.

Percentage of bike riders higher where lanes are installed: StatCan

Ontario's transportation minister is defending the decision to remove bike lanes on major Toronto streets, citing a low 1.2% bike commute rate from the 2021 Statistics Canada data for the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). However, cycling advocates argue that this data is misleading, as it includes suburbs with lower bike usage. They point to local data, such as a 2019 city survey showing that 44% of Torontonians bike in good weather for commuting, and 70% bike for transportation or leisure. Additionally, BikeShare Toronto's ridership has surged, with over six million trips expected by the end of 2024. The debate continues as the province moves to remove bike lanes, while the city and cycling advocates push back.

Canada has just 6 years to achieve 'the greatest share of emission reductions,' warns environment watchdog

Canada's environment watchdog issued another reality check Thursday, warning that the country has just six years to slash the lion's share of its emissions to reach its climate goals.

"To meet the 2030 target, the greatest share of emissions reductions will need to occur in the next six years," says a new report from Canada's commissioner of the environment and sustainable development.

Thursday's report recognizes that progress is being made in certain areas but says more needs to happen faster.
