In October of 1972 US Patent application #299842 was filed, later granted as US Patent #3837331 in September 1974. The patent was granted for a "System and Method for Controlling the Nervous System of a Living Organism"

Taken from the Abstract:
"... The output of the system, typically an audio or visual signal, is fed back to the organism as a stimulus. Responding to the stimulus, the organism can be trained to control the waveform pattern of the bioelectrical signal generated in its own nervous system"

The inventor, Sidney Aaron Ross, is recorded as having died in 1988. While Google does not want you to know anything about him, a deeper search online reveals that Mr. Ross was Jewish and passed in May of 1988, and is buried at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills, CA.
