Long before antibiotics, silver was used in medicine and hospitals for its antimicrobial effects — especially on wounds, surgical materials, and sometimes medical surfaces.
Before the 1900s, documented uses included:
Applying silver compounds (especially silver nitrate) directly to wounds and ulcers
Using silver wire sutures in surgery because they caused fewer infections than silk or catgut
Using thin “silver leaf” or silver foil dressings on infected wounds
Sterilizing or preserving liquids in silver containers
Later in the 1800s, using silver solutions in hospitals as antiseptics
By the late 19th century, surgeons were using silver sutures specifically to reduce postoperative infection.
Silver was commonly used on wounds, in sutures, dressings, and antiseptic solutions.
There are also scattered historical references to silver-plated medical tools were silver plated. Fabrics and dressings contained silver threads.
The reason silver was valued is that silver ions inhibit bacterial growth.
Empirically they noticed wounds treated with silver often smelled less foul and became infected less often.
Silver remained one of the main antimicrobial treatments until antibiotics like penicillin became dominant in the 1940s.
So it’s recorded : Medieval elites avoided plague because of silver plates or that silver cured hundreds of diseases.
