Cow Protection Movement :-
* It is a predominantly Indian Religious and political movement aiming to protect cows , whose slaughter had been broadly opposed by Hindus , Buddhists , Jains , Zoroastrians & Sikhs.
* While the opposition to slaughter of animals , including cows, has extensive ancient roots in ancient history , the term refers to modern movements dating back to the colonial era.
* The earliest such activism is traceable to Namdhari (Kuka) Sikhs of Punjab who opposed cow slaughter in the 1860's .
* The movement became popular in 1880's and thereafter, attracting the support from the Arya Samaj founder Swami Dayanand Saraswati in the late 19th century and from Mahatma Gandhi in the early 20th century.
* In 1870's, Cow Protection movements spread rapidly in the Punjab , the North west provinces , Awash and Rohilkhand. Arya Samaj had a tremendous role in skillfully converting this sentiment into a national movement.
* Dayanand Saraswati published the "Gaukarunanidhi" in 1881 , and the local "Gaurakshini Sabhas" began springing up in many parts of Northern India from late 1880's , encouraged by the patronage of some lawyers and zamindars, as well as by the activities of some wandering sadhus.
* The first Gaurakshini Sabha (Cow Protection Society) was established in Punjab in 1882. The movement spread to rapidly all over North India and to Bengal, Bombay, Madras and other Central Provinces.
* According to Sekhar Bandyopadhyay, during Dayanand's time , cow protection movement was initially not overtly anti-muslim , but gradually became a source of communal tension.
* The Gaurakshini Sabhas became more militant after 1892-93 , perhaps reflecting to some extent orthodox resentment at the passing of the Age of the Consent Bill,1891.
* There were reports of forcible interference with the sale or slaughter of cows and even setting up of "Sabha" courts which punished sale to butchers by fine or social boycott.
* As Islamic revivalist trends were simultaneously insisting on the necessity of the Bakr-Id sacrifice , the ground was prepared for large scale riots of June-July 1893.
